Leah Senior, Musician

Tell us about your last album ‘Pretty Faces’ that came out in May last year?

Pretty Faces is a fairly delicate, old-time folk album. Looking back there are common lyrical themes that run through the songs…a search for some kind of creative or personal liberation. I am too much in my own head and a lot of the songs on this album come from a moment of transcending the noise and feeling free.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

My partner Jesse and I have just bought a tape machine and I am excited to be working on the next album at the moment. We play together in another band called Girlatones and will be recording an album for this in a few weeks as well. It’s nice to record at home because it feels relaxed and we have creative control over how we want it to sound.

You are a keen painter as well, does your painting inspire your music?

Yea, I am always calm and happiest when I am painting. It’s meditative and there is no pressure associated with it. I always like to be busy making stuff and painting is what I do when I’m stuck musically (which is often).

What is your favourite album of all time and why?

I guess the music that I keep coming back to is anything by Nick Drake, maybe his album Pink Moon or a collection of his home recordings. His music makes me feel euphoric and whimsical. I always feel like I’m in the right world when I listen to him.

How would you describe your style? Do you change when you perform?

I love 60s/70s folk and power pop and I think this comes through. A constant seems to be that everything always comes out sounding slightly melancholic. I can’t seem to help myself. I think I used to change more when I performed but as I become older I am more comfortable and try to just relax when I play.

Do you feel that there is a strong community in Melbourne amongst female musicians?

Yes for sure. I have made my closest female friends through playing music and I am often inspired and influenced by them.

What is your favourite season in Melbourne and why?

I love the moment the light changes in Autumn. When it’s crisp and still with delicate shadows cast across terrace houses. Sometimes going for a walk makes me want to cry. I always seem to write most in Autumn.

If you could choose anyone in the world to collaborate with, who would it be and why?

I think I am too shy to collaborate with any of my heroes. I like working with Jesse (my partner) because I am not as self-conscious and he understands me musically better than anyone.
